Harrisburg, Pennsylvania — During today’s Dauphin County Commissioners weekly public meeting, an agenda item targeting cooperation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement sparked a wide ranging discussion.
Protesters line up, one after another, to speak emotionally in favor of a “welcoming resolution” to declare Dauphin County a sanctuary for immigrant communities. Protesters said they were “appalled” by the activity of ICE, and some suggested that living in Dauphin County is comparable to Nazi Germany.
However, county officials agreed the board of commissioners cannot restrict law enforcement activity, and this resolution would actually cause harm to immigrant communities by creating a false sense of sanctuary.
Dauphin County Sheriff Nicholas Chimienti Jr. made a strong statement reaffirming his cooperation with all law enforcement agencies including ICE, saying, “Public safety should never be a political game.” Sheriff Chimienti added, “This board’s attempt to insert itself into the operational affairs of law enforcement crosses a dangerous line.”
After lengthy discussion, two of three Dauphin County Commissioners, Hartwick and Pries, voted against the resolution, therefore supporting cooperation with ICE. Commissioner Douglas voted to reject immigration enforcement, concluding that the county would be at increased risk of litigation as a result of potential lawsuits that could arise.
Commissioner Douglas is currently campaigning for a two-year federal seat in Pennsylvania’s 10th congressional district.

GOOD ! My wife is a legal immigrant. It took us years and thousands of dollars so she could come to the US. Send the illegal invaders back to where they came from. I have a solution……send the protesters back with an illegal invader under each arm.
