Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania – A loud explosion was heard and felt for dozens of miles around Cumberland and northern York Counties after sunset this evening.

Fire crews were dispatched to Simmons Road near Minnich Road after an explosion around 5:20p.m. when smoke and a possible barn fire were reported in Monroe Township.

The explosion was reportedly also heard near Carlisle, Mt. Holly Springs, and Dillsburg.

Initial reports of a barn fire were unfounded by first responders. According to a witness, firefighters found what was described as a “controlled burn” behind the barn. No information about the fuel source of the explosion has been released.

This is a developing story.

  1. Could this have been an underground explosion or part of a military operation? Seems suspicious that no further information has been released about the explosion. People are definitely talking about it.
