Newburgh, N.Y. – A man who pulled a gun on Newburgh city police late Friday afternoon was shot and killed by officers, according to authorities. A city police officer was shot when trying to arrest the armed man wanted for questioning in a shooting.
Newburgh residents rioted after a councilman-at-large, Omari Shakur, bitterly complained about police targeting blacks. Shakur posted a video on Facebook saying “an unarmed black man” was shot and killed by police, who he called “pigs,” and said are “killers.”
Bodycam footage clearly shows the man armed with a silver handgun violently resisting arrest, drawing his gun, and shooting the officer before getting shot to death by the police.
Police said officers spotted the man in the area of 40 William St. at 5 p.m. who was wanted for questioning in a shooting that had occurred the day before in the area of Benkard Avenue and William Street, said city Police Chief Douglas Solomon.
When officers approached the man, he pulled a silver handgun, according to authorities. A struggle ensued and the handgun discharged, prompting several officers to return fire, killing him, said Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler. One officer suffered a gunshot wound to his shoulder as well as injuries to his head when the gunman struck him with his gun, authorities said.
The officer was taken to the hospital for treatment. He was not identified and information on his condition was not released. The suspect was pronounced dead at Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital.
“Normally in an investigation of this type of incident we would not be releasing images this early in the investigation,” Hoovler said. “However, to allay community concerns, which quite frankly have been stoked by misinformation coming from a city official, we are releasing these images showing the armed man discharging his gun.”
A fire was burning at the intersection of First and Carpenter streets in the City of Newburgh about midnight Saturday. Tensions ran high in the city Friday evening after police said an armed man was shot and killed by a police officer, and an officer was shot, during an incident on William Street.
By 2 a.m. the sheriff’s office and fire department arrived to extinguished what was left of the fire at First and Carpenter streets.
Earlier Friday night police were called to Concord and First streets in the city for a “large crowd” and “rioting” according to scanner reports.
I wish peace for the community. These times are bad enough with out anyone like Omari Shakur stirring up trouble. I hope this community can clean up his mess. He should be the one to clean up but a punk like that hide. He needs to brush the 2 teeth he has left.
