Hershey, Pennsylvania — The Derry Township Board of Supervisors voted to approve a road construction project to add bike lanes in both directions on E. Chocolate Avenue, and remove a pedestrian refuge island at the intersection with Para Avenue.

During discussion about the road construction, supervisors thanked state Rep. Tom Mehaffie for securing two $500,000 grants to fund the project, which is expected to be completed in one year.

One eastbound lane of vehicle traffic will be eliminated to accommodate the new bike lanes beginning at Homestead Road. A hazardous pedestrian refuge island will also be removed as part of the project. A township engineer said the bike lanes will provide a buffer between vehicles and pedestrians walking on the sidewalk.

Rep. Mehaffie also recently secured a grant to install a new HVAC system at the Middletown Volunteer Fire Department.
