Update: The K9 suffered a graze wound when a bullet passed under the dog’s vest.
Officials say the dog is doing fine right now.
Harrisburg, Pennsylvania – A man opened fire while being chased by police in downtown Harrisburg early this morning. The man was being chased on foot near 2nd Street by Harrisburg Police and a Capitol K9 Officer (with dog) around 1:30am. He fired multiple shots at police near the 200 block of South Street. Officers returned fire and struck and killed the suspect who fired upon them.

No Harrisburg or Capitol Police officers were hurt in the chase and shooting. The K9 was spooked by the gunfire and ran away but was located shortly after.
Because it was officer-involved, the Dauphin County Sheriff’s office and District Attorney Fran Chardo will run lead on the investigation moving forward.
