Camp Hill, Pa. – Parents are concerned for the safety of their children at the Camp Hill Middle School regarding a mentally distressed teacher who regularly lies under her desk in front of students during class time to “soothe” herself when experiencing a mental health episode.
“It’s a regular occurrence. She tells the kids she is on adderall and having life problems,” Anita Burton told Harrisburg100 after a district school board meeting.
District parent Anita Burton initially raised the concern at Monday night’s school board meeting about the teacher whose identity is being kept anonymous at this time.
“There is a middle school teacher who is presenting a real safety issue not only to herself but to the students in the classroom. The students are fearful to bring this to anyone in authority’s attention because they see their parents’ complaints falling on deaf ears,” said Burton.
Instead of an immediate response to the safety risks posed by this teacher’s mental health, Burton said other teachers are instructing their students during class time to write letters of encouragement to this struggling teacher. “Does any of this seem normal to you?” she asked the Board.
Burton and another parent in the district, Allison Bortlemay, who spoke at the meeting, expressed that middle school students should not have to respond or witness this; rather the district needs to put safety first in the classroom, and see to it that any teacher in mental health crisis gets help.

Uhm, I’m in that study hall and she does this regularly. It’s because of her mental problems. The Kneppers are great, reasonable people who would never hurt anyone intentionally, especially teachers. This teacher tells us it’s because she didn’t take her adderall and she has ADHD and depression.

More than one parent of kids have mentioned this behavior to the School Board, including the parents cited in the article – who, do indeed have children in the CHSD. Not that that even matters. I have the utmost respect for teachers. It is a challenging job. IF, one needs to lay on the floor in an occupied classroom, one should also know enough to seek some sort of help. That this has happened repeatedly is unacceptable and needs addressed.
