Update:
Harrisburg, Pa – On Monday, April, 20 at noon more than ten-thousands citizens are expected to gather in the capital city to peacefully protest Governor Wolf’s excessive restrictions, and to take back the Keystone State.
Organizers are encouraging social distancing at the event, and attendees are told to “wear a face mask if you feel so inclined.”
Protests are beginning to emerge across the country as concerned citizens strive to return the economy to normal. These protests have been peaceful, as will this event. The organizations planning the event say they are not affiliated with any political group. They believe forcing healthy citizens to stay home and forcing businesses and churches to close is tyranny.
The state has been under a stay-at-home order since April 1 in an effort to slow the spread of the virus, which had killed 647 Pennsylvanians as of Wednesday. All nonessential business were ordered closed by the governor March 16. Millions of Pennsylvania residents have been unable to work and are filing for unemployment benefits in droves. Nearly 1.5 million in the Keystone State have filed for unemployment since March 15.
Maps have been provided for citizens who are planning to attend. The main routes feeding into the City of Harrisburg have been highlighted, including Interstates 81, 76, 83, and 283, as well as State Route 15, and 322. When entering, exiting, and traveling through the city it is important to avoid the areas around the hospitals, and emergency routes for first responders.
To bypass the hospital when entering the city from Interstate 83, take an alternative route by using the exit ramps at 13th and 17th Street, then proceed North to State Street. Turn west (left) onto State Street towards the rear of the Capitol Complex on Commonwealth Avenue, by crossing the State Street Bridge.
Attendees are advised to use caution when congregating near the Capitol steps and in the parking areas surrounding the Capitol Complex on North Street and on State Street.
Based on the online response, event organizers are expecting a large turnout. A rolling, or ‘drive-by’ protest has also been endorsed by the organizers of the event.
The suggested route will begin in the area of the Capitol Complex in downtown Harrisburg, then proceed north on the 3-lane, one-way N. 2nd Street towards the Governor’s mansion on the 2000 block where a Sunoco gas station is positioned at the intersection. Organizers have emphasized the importance of making a bold statement here as a show of force to counter the tyranny of the Governor.
The route will then turn east (right) on the two-way Maclay Street and proceed to turn south on two-way N. 3rd Street.
Event organizers also plan to protest Harrisburg’s mayor, an ally of Governor Wolf. Mayor Eric Papenfuse has recently been named in a federal lawsuit regarding an abuse of power scandal. The mayor owns a controversial bookstore, The Midtown Scholar, that is located on this section of the route on N. 3rd St., at the Broad Street Market. Concerned citizens also intend to protest deviant activity that has been hosted by the mayor at his bookstore.
From here the route will continue down 3rd Street towards the Capitol Complex. The main steps in front of the Pennsylvania State Capitol are located on N. 3rd Street at State Street. The wide open area at this intersection has been the traditional backdrop for activism in the city.
The areas highlighted in purple are emergency response routes and must be avoided. This means that traffic entering the city cannot use the 2nd Street gateway entrance from Interstate 83. The Market Street Bridge and Front Street should be avoided entirely.
Citizens traveling from Pittsburgh are suggested to use the Gettysburg Pike exit from Intestate 76 (Pennsylvania Turnpike), then proceed north on Route 15 towards the Harvey Taylor Bridge.
For those incoming from Interstate 81, it has been suggested to use Cameron and Maclay Streets to avoid Front Street.

In his press conference on Friday, April 17, 2020 Governor Wolf acknowledged that people have the right to protest. However,your right to protest should be exercised in such a way that it doesn’t threaten your own health and safety as well as the health and safety of other people. The type of mass gathering that you are promoting violates the Guidelines from the Federal Centers for Disease Control which are designed to prevent the spread of the deadly Coronavirus. What you are advocating promotes the spread of the pandemic. You are putting your own lives, first responders’lives,and many other people’s lives at risk, especially vulnerable people like the elderly.

Please, shut up. I’ve survived this long by being careful and if I want to protest (as a small business owner that is suffering), I will and I should. If you are afraid, don’t come out. We don’t need a nay sayer anyways. This protest has been posted with guidelines for all of us to be safe. I am 58, a diabetic with asthma, a small business owner and also a part-time school bus driver. If I haven’t contracted COVID-19 by now, then I must be doing things right.

Do you have Family? Children? Are their lives important to you? Do you care if you put them at risk? You have underlying health issues? You must have a death wish then? I don’t care what precautionary measures any of you’s take, there is no way with all these people that there can be social distancing! You should all be arrested and instead of being thrown in jail, they should throw all of you in an ICU to witness the people on respirators almost near death and fighting for their lives being all alone with no one by their sides but medical personnel and your punishment would be to witness them suffering until the very end. I assume you have emperical evidence that a protest will spread the virus? Let’s stay away from name calling and have a civil discussion about the dangers of economic collapse and the decline of the mental health of a lot of people due to the stay at home order. There are other things that should be considered. Please do not be so dismissive when there are other negative consequences that should be discussed. BTW – there are two health care workers in my household. I know what is going on out there.

First – took away their ability to defend themselves. They confiscated their guns.
Second – controlled the schools and indoctrinated the young people to fit their anti-semetic agenda
Third – forced Jews to identify themselves by having them wear the star of David.

I am not one of the protesters, but those who I know have very real concerns that should not be dismissed so readily. Just how close are we to a situation that would bring such huge jobs losses that many families could never recover? Just how close are we to putting the mental health of a large number of people at great risk? So if I am no longer able to provide for my family because I cannot work, isn’t that a concern? yes, I have a family and children. if I cannot go to work to bring the income I need to provide for them, I am as concerned about that as I am about the virus.
I am simply saying that there are other things to consider. I have health care workers in my family. I know what they are facing. But our government must be careful not to introduce new problems that are equally perilous to the health and well being of the citizens of PA.

The loss of jobs is not something we should so readily dismiss. If enough jobs are lost to cause an economic collapse, there is a very real possibility that lives will be lost as a result. The great depression proved that to be a very real danger. So let’s not so easily dismiss job loss. I realize there are lived being lost – that is undeniable and regrettable. We simply have to be careful that we don’t introduce a situation that has the potential to lead to a greater problem

I appreciate your civil post – no name calling or bad words. I really do like when we can have a civil discussion. With that said, I believe many of the protesters plan on doing what you suggest, that is, staying in their vehicles. Those who I know are going are doing just that. Your comment to listen to the scientists and medical professionals is fine, but they are NOT economists. Your assertion that our only hope for saving lives AND getting our economy back on track is to stay home is what many of us are questioning. A severe economic downturn has the potential to create a situation that could lead to putting more lives at risk. Llisten to those who lost loved ones during the great depression. The mental health of the residents of PA is also something to monitor. The stay at home order has a negative impact to the economy as well as the mental health of a large number of people. Many of us are protesting that the only criteria being considering for easing the restrictions is the rate of infection. But that cannot be the only criteria. If the economy collapses or we end up with a much larger number of people suffering debilitating depression or anxiety , then what have we just done?

Let’s get real and serious here. I have a son who was in EMT school when the stay at home order was issued. EMT training requires too much hands-on work, so the EMT class is now closed. He would have graduated in June. The indefinite timeframe for the stay at home order means he has no idea when we can resume EMT training. There are EMTs quitting their jobs because of the current situation. He is one who wants to get into the fight, along with his classmates, but they can’t. Another son of my wants to be a firefighter, But guess what? Firefighter training facilities are closed. Another son is very close to being certified as a commercial pilot. You guess it. Flight schools are grounded. Pilots have to stay current on their certifications. My son is about to lose his because he cannot fly. Yet another child is a health care worker who has seen several patients die. She cannot visit us in person, nor is she supposed to visit her boyfriend. Are her needs for comfort and help coping to be ignored? I am not making this stuff up. This is my reality. So now I am supposed to provide my family on half of my income from unemployment insurance, for how long exactly? Meanwhile, my neighbors are school teachers who are not working and yet are still fully paid. These are valid concerns. How exactly are our leaders addressing these things? Why can’t we have a CIVIL discussion so our leaders can know what is happening to families like mine. I am not a neo-nazi as Ray Lay wants to imply. It’s unfortunate that there are a few protesters who are, but that does NOT invalidate my concerns or my reasons to protest in order to inform our government on the consequences that may not be aware of. Just how are we to address the fact that EMT and paramedic classes are cancelled when those are just the type of people we need right now? Hence my reasons for protesting.

We need to have a civil discussion on what the criteria is for easing up on restriction. In my view, there are at least three areas that need to be considered. The rate of infection seems to be the ONLY criteria, but there are others that must be considered. The three main areas are: 1) The rate of infection course, 2) how close do we want o get to economic collapse or even just major economic impacts to families that jeapardize their ability to stay in their homes, provide for their families, etc? 3) what is the impact to the mental health of the residents of PA? I realize of course that determining the decline of mental health due to the ongoing restriction will be difficult to quantify, but I can testify that I have seen some young people that are struggling with depression who were not suffering before the stay at home order. The rate of infection is a consideration, of course, but it cannot be the only consideration. If the economy collapses, a lot more people will suffer greatly. Look up on the history of the great depression. I know of someone whose grandfather dies of starvation during the great depression. The leaders of PA need to guard against this possibility. That is why many of us are protesting.
